A spokesman for the Babyshambles frontman said the star had been caught up in an anti-drugs operation launched after the band's concert at Shrewsbury Music Hall last night.

The spokesman told journalists: "I can confirm that he was detained and held overnight, although I have no details of the exact circumstances." Babyshambles' gig in Norwich tonight has been cancelled due to the incident, the spokesman added.

Earlier, police disclosed that a man, believed to be Doherty , and a woman had both been arrested for suspected possession of a class A drug.

A police spokesman said: "In the early hours of this morning officers stopped a minibus in Shrewsbury town centre and detained a number of people for the purposes of a drugs search.

"Officers also attended one building in Shrewsbury and detained a number of other individuals."

A search warrant was also executed on two coaches parked in Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury, and 17 other people were searched for drugs during the "intelligence-led" operation.

"This operation involved CID and traffic officers, dog handlers and forensic investigators," the police spokesman said.

"A number of items have been recovered and these will be subjected to forensic examination in due course. "A quantity of what's believed to be a class A drug has also been recovered."

The woman who was arrested was released after questioning and will face no further action, officers said. The man in custody is being questioned by officers in Telford this evening.
