Irish bridge teams won silver and bronze medals at the European Union Team Championships in Salsomaggiore, Italy. In the women's championship, Aileen and Rebecca O'Keeffe, Marie Barry and Ann Montwill were leading with one board to play, but the unfavourable position of the King of Trumps determined the outcome, as Ireland went down in a reasonable game while their opponents stayed in a part score.
The final top standings were: 1, The Netherlands, 166; 2, Ireland, 163; 3, Italy, 157. In the mixed teams, Rory Boland, Niall Kennedy, Ann and Denis Dillon and Grainne Barton took the third prize.
