Formula One:Renault boss Flavio Briatore believes the FIA's decision to legalise the double diffusers has made a farce of the world championship.

The FIA's International Court of Appeal on Wednesday approved the controversial component that has been used since the start of the season by Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams.

The component's effect has been clear to see, with Brawn's Jenson Button boasting two wins from two so far this season and being made favourite to claim a third victory at the Chinese Grand Prix this weekend.

In contrast, last year's heavyweights McLaren and Ferrari have struggled so far, while Fernando Alonso picked up Renault's only four points this season at the Australian GP.

Briatore fears it is now too late for the rest of the teams to catch up and believes interest in the sport for the rest of the season will suffer as a result.

"Our (McLaren, Ferrari and Renault) drivers are or have been world champions, and then you have a (Brawn) driver who was almost retired, and another who is a 'paracarro' (Italian for a roadside concrete post) fighting for the championship," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "I don't know how we can say we have credibility.

"It is impossible to recover the ground we have lost on those teams. In three or four races the championship will be decided and I don't know what the interest of the TV viewers will be when Button has 60 points and (Williams' Kazuki) Nakajima 50.

"It will be better to listen only on radio and watch something else."

Briatore also questioned the wisdom of the decision in a time when Formula One is on a cost cutting drive due to the current financial climate.

"We have spent €15 million on KERS, another 10 on the diffuser, so we have five left for travel and to pay the employees," added the Italian.
