A 10-year-old boy was knocked down and killed while crossing a road in Co Limerick this morning.

A 10-year-old boy was knocked down and killed while crossing a road in Co Limerick this morning.

The boy was crossing on the road in the townland of Direen on the road between Athea and Glin at about 8am when he was hit by a van, a Garda spokeswoman said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital. A post mortem is expected to be carried out there this afternoon. The van driver was not injured.

The spokeswoman said the boy had not yet been named. The road was closed after the incident but has since re-opened, she added.
