A body found in a bog in Co Offaly may have been there for hundreds of years, gardaí believe.

Following a post-mortem carried out by the Deputy State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy it was determined that the body had been in the bog for hundreds of years - perhaps even 500 years a garda spokesman told ireland.com.

The discovery of the body was made by a man working in the bog yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí are no longer investigating the circumstances of how the body came to be in the bog.
