N'djamena - At least 40 people were killed when the lorry they were travelling on plunged off a bridge into a river near N'Djamena, capital of Chad, according to eyewitnesses.

Police and rescue workers had removed some 40 bodies from the Chari river by nightfall yesterday, the witnesses said, though many more were believed to be in the water after the accident.
