Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital has expressed "deep regret" after it emerged four lungs and two hearts were found in the remains of a British tourist who died while on holiday in Ireland last month.

Louie Selo from Surrey in the UK died of a heart attack in a taxi outside Dublin Airport on August 2nd while on holiday with his wife.

A post mortem was carried out on his body in Beaumont before his remains were brought back to the UK. However, when his body was examined by a British coroner - a standard practice for when Britons die abroad - the extra organs were found inside the body in a plastic viscera bag.

They were later discovered to belong to an Irish person. They have been returned and buried in a religious ceremony.

A spokesman this evening told ireland.com: "There is an investigation going on and we hope to have the results very shortly.

"No member of staff has been suspended but the investigation could lead to disciplinary action.

He said the hospital had been in touch with both families concerned. "We have expressed deep regret. It should never have happened."
