Several units of the Dublin fire brigade were called out to extinguish a fire at Bewley's Hotel in Ballsbridge last night.

The alert was raised at about 11.30pm when the fire was discovered in the hotel's laundry room. Six tenders were called to the 300-room hotel and 183 guests were evacuated along with staff as a precaution. The fire was subsequently extinguished and the emergency services left the scene at 1.30am.

Dublin Fire Brigade said a building of this type would warrant a sizable response as a matter of course. The cause of the fire is still being investigated and while the extent of damage to the building is not yet known, it is understood the fire did not spread beyond the laundry area.

Bewley's communications director Tracey Moran said the hotel's safety systems and procedures "worked as intended".

"Our primary concern is always for the safety and well being of both our guests and staff," Ms Moran said in a statement.

The company said that all systems have now been restored and are working normally.

"It is business as usual in the hotel today."

Built in the 1880s, the building originally housed a school for the orphan daughters of the Masons. It was purchased by the RDS in the 1970s before being resold and remodelled as a hotel in the 1990s.
