The main prize in the 1996 Jesuit Film and Video Awards, presented by the Jesuit Communications Centre, has gone, to a documentary about the artist Robert Ballagh. The film was directed by Mr Michael Carolan, a final year student of history and anthropology at Maynooth College. It explored the historical concerns of Mr Ballagh's art.

The best drama prize went to Ms Aisling Regan, of the Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design, for the film Mercy, which is about a daughter coping with her mother's Alzheimer's disease.

The best Irish language film, Is Tuisce Deoch na Sceal, deals with alcoholism. The Activity Centre, a film about the work of a cross community project in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, won the best music prize.
