North Down: It was a bad day for Mr Bob McCartney, who topped the poll in 1998 Assembly with 8,188 votes for the UK Unionist Party.

Yesterday his vote was more than halved and he was trailing in fifth place after the first count.

One of three DUP candidates, Mr Leslie Cree, topped the poll with 3,900 votes, 506 votes shy of the quota. He was followed by Mr Peter Weir, who defected to the DUP from the UUP. His colleague, Mr Alex Easton was in third place after the first count, while the outgoing MLA and Policing Board member, Mr Alan McFarland, lay in fourth place.

Alliance's Ms Eileen Bell was struggling to hold her seat, with Ms Diana Peacock of the UUP threatening to eclipse her for the final seat. Ms Jane Morrice of the Women's Coalition was refusing to accept defeat yesterday, but with a first count vote which placed her in 10th place, her seat was looking far from certain.
