Almost 2,500 of this year's Leaving Cert grades were upgraded on appeal, according to figures issued to schools today.

Higher-level English continues to attract the most appeals - 1,616, of which 454 were upgraded.

The following is the pattern in other subjects at higher level. Irish: 679 appeals, 199 upgrades. Maths: 544 appeals, 95 upgrades. Geography: 799 appeals, 273 upgrades. History: 486 appeals, 191 upgrades. Business: 650 appeals, 243 upgrades. Biology: 573 appeals, 161 upgrades. Accounting: 139 appeals. 43 upgrades.

The appeal results for this year follow the general recent pattern. More Higher Level students opt to appeal than those taking Ordinary Level papers.

However, over 700 students appealed their results in Ordinary Level Maths and 120 secured an upgrade.

In the appeals process, the work of each candidate is fully re-marked, question by question. The remarking is performed by a different examiner. This year the 8,955 grades were appealed, and there were 2,413 upgrades. Just 15 grades were revised downwards.
