Irish aid agencies have begun pulling expatriate staff out of Rwanda in response to the deteriorating security situation in the country, where eight aid workers and human rights observers have been killed in the past fortnight.

Trocaire decided yesterday to withdraw all but four core staff from the central African republic. Up to a month ago, the agency employed 17 expatriate workers at four locations in Rwanda.

Concern is also reviewing its involvement in Rwanda, and expects up to half its 26 staff to leave.

Another Irish agency, Refugee Trust, said it was considering its position.
