SIPTU has deferred further strike action at St Ita's psychiatric hospital in Portrane, Co Dublin, following the intervention of the Labour Relations Commission. Both sides are to meet at the LRC on Wednesday.

Mr Raymond O'Reilly of SIPTU said this would allow for more effective procedures to deal with staff grievances over working conditions.

Meanwhile, the Northern Area Health Board has rejected Mr O'Reilly's allegations about cockroaches, mice and rats at St Ita's, saying no reports of infestation had been made about the kitchens or patients' areas.
