€ 7m contraband cigarettes haul in Dublin port

A consignment of contraband cigarettes, thought to be worth €6.84m, have been siezed in Dublin today

A consignment of contraband cigarettes, thought to be worth €6.84m, have been siezed in Dublin today. They arrived from Miami by way of Rotterdam.

Four 40ft containers, which were listed as carrying furniture, were discoverd to contain 30 million cigartettes.

It is thought that the consignment was intended for markets in Britain and Northern Ireland and came via a route previously used.

The Revenue Commissioners said the cigarettes could have cost the Exchequer €5.6m in lost duties and taxes, if they went on sale here.
