The brother of a Belfast woman killed by her husband has described the husband's seven year jail sentence for manslaughter as "an absolute sham".

Maurice Anthony Snodden (38) of Grosvenor Road, Belfast had been accused of murdering his wife, Rita, on Hallowe'en 1994; the charge was dropped at Belfast Crown Court when he pleaded to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Snodden kicked his wife after she fell down stairs in their home, but a post mortem examination could not tell whether her fatal injuries were caused by the fall or the assault.

Mrs Snodden's brother, Patsy Carberry, expressed anger at the sentence.
