A couple have been awarded almost £26,000 in damages against a building contractor who left their upmarket home "in an awful mess".

Judge Kevin Haugh said in Dublin Circuit Civil Court that Mr Sean and Ms Eileen Clancy had to live in "nightmare" circumstances when a builder, Mr Gerry Kellet, Grangemore Drive, Kilbarrack, Dublin, botched a major renovation job on their home at Howth Road, Dublin.

Mr Clancy told the court he and his wife had been left for weeks without cooking facilities and proper heating because Mr Kellet had used inferior and inadequate materials. Mr Kellet had also failed to remove rubble from the site, the court heard.
