The number of suicides recorded in Northern Ireland has fallen by 17 per cent over the past year, according to new figures from the British Government's research agency.

In 2007, there were 242 deaths recorded as suicides, compared to 291 in 2006.

The reduction in the number of deaths recorded last year followed the establishment of a prevention helpline and extra money for mental health services.

"Listening to the experiences of groups, such as those working in north and west Belfast, proves that the strategy is working," said Health Minister Michael McGimpsey today.

The minister was speaking at a meeting with community and voluntary organisations in Belfast which have been working with government agencies to tackle the problem of suicide.

"Earlier this year I announced £3.5million to run the new regional suicide prevention helpline, this means that a total of more than £6million has now been allocated each year to implement the suicide prevention strategy and take  forward a range of initiatives aimed at reducing suicide rates," said Mr McGimpsey.

"In addition, £46million will be invested over the next three years in the provision of services in the community for those with mental health needs."
