Some 160 people died in road traffic accidents in Northern Ireland last year, 16 more than in 1997, according to the RUC. The force said it had breath-tested 2,338 drivers during its road safety campaign over Christmas and New Year. Of these, 253 failed. The RUC said 23 people died on the roads during the campaign.
