AUTUMN is a time of major bird migration – tens of thousands of swallows are already making their way from Ireland where they’ve spent the summer and are heading for Africa where they’ll stay for the winter.

Birdwatch Ireland has already spotted a steady stream of swallows flying over its offices in Kilcoole, Co Wicklow. They cover 320km a day, mostly during daylight.

As they are leaving, winter birds are on the way here from the Arctic Circle and, over the coming weeks, branches of Birdwatch Ireland will be holding talks about the new arrivals.

A bird walk and talk will be held tomorrow in Booterstown, Co Dublin. Meet in the car park at Booterstown Dart station at 10.30am.

Next week to welcome the birds, An Taisce is holding a beach clean-up at Booterstown beach and foreshore. Meet at the car park footbridge on Sunday, October 23rd, at 2pm. Tea, coffee and cake afterwards. Bring gloves.
