• Mazda2

A hugely underrated car, the Mazda2 deserves to be right up there at the top of the supermini pile.

Great to drive and with good engines, it makes a great alternative buy. 1.4-litre diesel version is a cracker.

Prices start at €14,595

• Seat Ibiza

Volkswagen build quality with more interesting looks, the Ibiza is well equipped and it isn't bad value either. One of the best looking cars in its class.

Prices from €14,910

• Hyundai i20

The Hyundai i10 was one of the hits of 2008. With a longer wheelbase and all new engines including a 75bhp 1.2-litre and a 90bhp 1.4-litre the i20 should be one to watch.

We will bring you a first drive of the i20 in two weeks' time.

Prices estimated to start from €15,500

• Alfa Romeo Mito

Probably a little on the expensive side for a supermini, but as a premium product the Mito will be one to watch. It has received good reviews from the critics and is priced aggressively against its biggest competitor, the Mini.

Engines will include 1.4-litre petrol and 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre diesel. The 1.3-litre diesel falls into the lowest tax bandA car.

Prices start from €18,995
