94 Fiat 500x: no one has quite got compact crossover right yet

Boot size is very limiting but this car has a firm sportiness and is not at all bad to drive

Yet again, we find a compact crossover languishing near the bottom of the list, which suggests that in spite of the runaway popularity of such cars, no one’s quite got the recipe right yet.

The 500x shares its chassis and engines with the Jeep Renegade, but it really does feel like an entirely different car. The cabin is brighter and lighter for a start, and it does drive quite differently too – there is a firmer sportiness to the 500x, and while it's no hot hatch it is actually not at all bad to drive.

Cabin quality looks and feels good too, although the 500x doesn’t feel quite so well made as the latest versions of the diminutive 500 itself. Space in the back seats is okay, but once again in this class of car, space in the boot is a seriously limiting factor for growing families.

The 1.6 MultiJet diesel is punchy but noisy, so unless you’re doing lots of long motorway miles, you might be better off with the 1.4 MultiAir turbo petrol.
