Wardrobing: Casual men’s jackets for spring

A reader seeks advice: ‘I’m looking for something lightweight that’s suitable for everyday wear’

Q Just wondering if you could help me out – it’s coming into spring now and I cannot wait to stop wearing my black, heavy woolen winter coat. I don’t shop often so I’m looking for something casual and lightweight that’s suitable for everyday wear.

John, Meath

A Dear John,

In the longer version of your query, you signed off by saying, “Thanks babes xx” – so I assume (and pray) that you are under 30. A word to the wise; when asking a stranger for help, it’s best not to sign off with “babes”. There is a reason that charity muggers start their spiel with “Excuse me, I just need a minute of your time,” not waggling their eyebrows and shouting “Eyyyyyy” in the style of The Fonz.

When it comes to lightweight jackets for spring, you're spoilt for choice. Bomber jackets, Harringtons, denim jackets, unlined parkas, varsity jackets, lightweight macs; the list goes on. I almost feel jealous. The only trouble with the majority of the menswear shapes for men your age (again, I pray that you are under 30, for your sake and everyone elses) is that they can be a bit self-consciously retro. Harrington jackets have the potential to make one look like an extra from This Is England. The wrong varsity jacket is an ideal starting point for a "stereotypical American jock" Halloween costume.

Take those shapes and pare them down. Paul Smith does a lovely varsity/bomber jacket in lightweight leather and satin. Cos has a great knitted bomber jacket in lighter grey and white – perfect for spring. And Topman does a great stretch denim jacket; just make sure to size up if you want a less clingy fit. Okay, babes?
