CHILLY NOVEMBER days demand certain wardrobe necessities. Top of the list is a winter coat, the main line of defence. The newest cocoon or balloon shapes have a Belle Époque air, particularly when edged with fake fur. There’s the ever-present military trend, safe regalia at any time, or the trench in warmer fabrics and wintry shades, seen in various interpretations on the catwalks, even skirted at Burberry. Camel coats? They’re back in vogue, too.

Betty Jackson’s cuddly numbers with their deep bucket pockets and shawl collars in red wool or soft mohair are snug winter wrap ups, but high collars that hide rather than frame the face can be tricky. How you like your winter wrapping – tied, buckled, belted or bowed – and what’s underneath determine the outer shape. The tall can get away with wraparounds, funnel necks and full lengths, but shorter figures suit single breasted, princess lines, cutaway collars and bracelet sleeves. There’s plenty of choice, such as these ones pictured, from Kilkenny shops nationwide.

A shapely well-cut black or navy coat that is free of fuss always looks stylish, but colours such as red, white and even a judicious shade of yellow brighten up the look and add a playful twist to a winter cover-up.
