Trending: Motocross mojo

Bad-girl bikers and bright colours are to the fore with this new trend

Fashion trends are renowned for making the practical impractical. The motocross-inspired trend, more suited to a gentle city stroll than a mud-splattered motorcycle ride, is no exception.

Strictly speaking, this look isn't very faithful to the motocross uniform of padded jumpsuits and helmets. It was first introduced to the fashion world by designers Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier as part of their first collection for Marc by Marc Jacobs, and it takes indirect inspiration from the bad girls of biking, with bright motifs reminiscent of their idiosyncratic jumpsuits, clumpy boots and racing stripes. Penneys has a good selection of motocross-inspired items coming in over autumn. Or you could channel the look in a more grown-up way with Zara's striped trousers. Those who want to invest in the trend without compromising on staying power can go with this Perfecto jacket by Schott – the absolute best of the bikers.
