The SAG awards: winners and bruises

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are often seen as a pre-empt to the Oscars, not only in terms of films, but also in relation to who will be upping their fashion stakes in the coming weeks.

The dresses on show last night were varied and like any good awards show attendants outfits were an assortment wonderful and not so. No one style shone but like a bully in the SAG awards playground there was certainly one colour palette that reigned supreme.  Purple, green and a touch of yellow sprouted from the red carpet; the colour palette of a bruise, a few days old, appeared to be the hue de rigour.

Keira Knightley, nominated for her part in The Imitation Game, looked uncharacteristically soft in a deep-plum gown by British designer Erdem Moralioglu. She told E! News that she is avoiding wearing anything tight over her new baby bump, and the flowing layers of the Erdem dress were the perfect solution.

Claire Danes wore an olive green Marc Jacobs gown that echoed the military style seen on the Spring Summer 2015 runway for the designer.  The column dress featured cabochons (shaped and polished, rounded gemstones) studded down the sides and a utilitarian style belt cinched in at the waist.

Jennifer Aniston shocked fashion followers by wearing a plunging vintage John Galliano gown. Not only is it unusual for Anniston to wear anything other than black but vintage is an unusual choice for any red carpet. Wearing Galliano was also a risk as the controversial designer has only just returned to fashion (as artistic director of Maison ) since exiting Dior in 2011 after accusations of racist comments.

Julianne Moore shone in emerald green Givenchy designed for her by Riccardo Tisci. The highly embroidered, figure hugging dress perfectly complimented her skin tone and was worn with Chopard jewellery.

Naomi Watts was the picture of sophistication in a deep purple, off-the-shoulder Balenciaga gown. The St. Vincent actress often sports this classic fish tale style skirt and accessorised with silver Bvlgari cuff. Watts had an eventful night, when up on stage to accept the award for outstanding cast in a motion picture for Birdman, Watts tripped over Emma Stone's Dior gown, and very nearly went head-over-Balenciaga.

Camilla Alves, wife of Matthew McConaughey, looked stunning in strapless, grape coloured Donna Karen Atelier. The former model out shone many of the actual stars of the night in this curve enhancing gown, unfortunately however, it didn't distract from McConaughey's beard.

 Patricia Arquette, who came away with the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role in the film Boyhood wore a custom Vivienne Westwood gown. The structured dark green dress fitted the 46-year-old to perfection and was accompanied by Brian Atwood shoes, and Fred Leighton earrings.

To finish the night of like any good bruise, Uzo Aduba of Orange Is The New Black accepted her first SAG award while wearing a perforated  bright yellow dress by Angel Sanchez.

Special Mention

Despite almost killing Naomi Watts, Emma Stone stole the night in a tuxedo inspired Dior gown. This is the 26-year-old’s second daring red carpet statement after sporting a strapless Lanvin jumpsuit to the Golden Globes recently. The red-head continues to prove that taking a risk is worth it, more of the same please Emma.
