In this country we are very fond of Rioja Reserva, a smooth rounded wine that has been aged for a minimum of three years, including one in oak barrels, before release. There is more to Rioja than Rioja Reserva, however. This week I feature two other versions, a white oak-aged Rioja and a Rioja Crianza, which has been aged for a shorter period and therefore has more ripe fruit.

Monte Real Rioja Blanco Fermentado en Barrica 2024, Bodegas Riojanas
12.5%, €15.99 down to €12.79
Fresh and fruity with subtle vanilla and spice from the oak ageing, as well as lime zest, green apples and some exotic fruits. Try it with creamy smoked fish dishes, or salmon with a buttery sauce. O’Briens

Altos Ibéricos Rioja Crianza 2020
14%, €19.99, down to €14.99
This has nice, subtle oak, some leather touches, abundant dark cherry and plum fruit, and light tannins on the finish. Well-made and ready to drink now with lamb dishes, firm cheeses, or roasted Mediterranean vegetables. O’Briens
