John Wilson: A crisp white and a warming red from O’Briens

Wines for the Weekend: South African and Portugese wines offering good value for money

Two wines from O’Briens this week. They will be on promotion until Sunday 10th. South African Chenin Blanc varies in style from crisp and refreshing to rich and textured. The MAN Chenin Banc below falls somewhere in between the two but veers towards the crisp and refreshing style. It offers good value for money.

The Douro Valley in Portugal is better known for producing Port but in recent years the region has started making some increasingly good red table wines. The Altano below is a great example.

MAN Organic Chenin Blanc 2023, Cape Coast, South Africa, Organic

Fresh and vibrant with nicely textured cantaloupe and peach fruits. Lovely on its own, and even better with grilled sea bass, salmon or tuna.

13% abv, €12.95 down from €16.95 from O’Briens

Altano Douro 2021, Symington Family Estates, Portugal

Lovely warming ripe red fruits with a touch of spice. This punches way above its weight. Try it with grilled pork, herby meatballs, or aubergines in a spicy tomato sauce.
