The Road to Memphis by Mildred D. Taylor is the third book in the trilogy that began with Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. The narrator Cassie Logan, whom we first met as a girl, has now grown into a young woman. The book opens as she prepares to return for her last term of high school. It tells the story of the flight of Cassie's friend Moe, after he attacks a white boy. It highlights the prejudice and injustice suffered by African-Americans in the Deep South during the early 1940s, but also weaves in Cassie's fears of going away to college and her newly emerging interest in men. The book is full of tension yet an enjoyable read, written with humour and a knowledge of the times and characters. It brings themes of friendship, love, loyalty and racism to our attention and makes us think, a good aspect of any book.
