There’s much understated charm and determination to the debut album from Los Angeles soul trio King.

While a lot of modern soul and r’n’b releases still adhere to a defined process and sound, King’s shapeshifting makes for an album that is neither a throwback nor a futuristic glitchfest.

Instead, the three vocalists – Paris Strother, her sister Amber, and Anita Bias – allow the trump card that is their heavenly way with harmonies to purr on songs that are simple yet effortlessly classy.

Dreamy, hazy and languid, their vocals make for a soul album with remarkably pastoral overtones.

But, as songs such as The Greatest, Mr Chameleon and, especially, Hey demonstrate, King are making music for town and country.

An album of soft power, serenity and space-age soul which truly gets under the skin.
