An exclusive glimpse into the Gloaming’s world

A new documentary celebrates trad supergroup the Gloaming – here’s an exclusive first look

The Gloaming’s debut album is one of the most anticipated Irish records of 2014. The band, made up of Thomas Bartlett, Dennis Cahill, Martin Hayes, Iarla Ó Lionáird and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, have already built up a formidable reputation, thanks to their peerless musical heritage and, more recently, their electrifying live shows.

What we’ve heard of the record so far has been thrilling – the power of traditional music, refined and distilled, and honed with flashes of contemporary music and jazz, creating something unpredictable, elemental and deeply emotional. It is due out on Real World Records on January 20th.

At 11.30pm on December 30th, RTÉ One will screen Moment to Moment, a documentary about the band made by filmmaker and musician Philip King, and it gives a thrilling insight into the Gloaming's formation and purpose, and where they hope to bring traditional music. Here, we have an exclusive extract from that documentary, featuring the song Saoirse.
