Apps that recognise recorded music from a snippet of a track have become a useful tool for smartphone users. No longer do you have to trawl the internet to find the name of a track you half heard on the radio two weeks ago. Now you can just whip out your smartphone and tag the track within seconds.

SoundHound takes it a step further. Not only will it recognise radio-friendly tunes but, unlike other apps, you can even hum the tune yourself to see if you get a hit. How accurate this is varies - usually according to your singing skills - but more often than not it returned the correct result.

Instant music search has also become a little easier thanks to voice recognition, which allows you to search for tracks by title or artist name. You get results back that include lyrics, YouTube videos, reviews and artist biographies.
