The fourth East Cork Early Music Festival opens with the Avison Ensemble, directed by Pavlo Beznosiuk, in a programme of German and Italian baroque music at St Fin Barre's Cathedral in Cork on Wednesday, September 6th.

On Friday, September 8th, the dramatic medieval poem Beowulf takes to the stage as Kieran Ahern reads from Seamus Heaney's recent reworking of the piece (The Old Distillery, 6pm). This is followed by a performance in Old English by Benjamin Bagby, with lute accompaniment (St John the Baptist Church, Midleton, 8pm).

The Golden Age of the Triosonata (Cloyne Cathedral, Saturday 9th, 8 pm), will see the IBO Chamber Soloists - Claire Duff, violin; Sarah MacMahon, cello; Malcolm Proud, harpsichord and Richard Sweeney, theorbo, directed by Monica Huggett, violin - perform sonatas by Handel, Corelli, Bach and Geminiani.

And on Sunday, harpsichordists Gillian Smith and Malcolm Proud perform Bach's monumental The Art of Fugue in Fota House, Carrigtwohill (above) at noon.
