Martinu {/TABLE} DSCH does not stand for Dublin Symphonic Conservatoire Holiday as one might have been tempted to think but for Shostakovich's musical signature, which is quoted in Schnittke's Praeludium for violin and violin on tape, an austere work which was played with compelling intensity by Brona Cahill.

The principal item in the DSCH concert on Wednesday in the Exam Hall, TCD was Prokofiev's entertainment, Peter and the Wolf It was entertaining but not all of the players were of the same standard and the performance was only good in parts. The narrator, Iseult Golden, had often to struggle to be heard, and her voice was not able to overcome the cavernous acoustic of the Exam Hall.

Six of the young people, violin, cello, trumpet, clarinet, bassoon and piano, conducted by Ciaran Crilly, ended the rather short concert with Martinu's La revue de cuisine. This jazzy piece from the 1920s was great fun, particularly in the trumpet dominated Charleston, but needed a lighter approach.
