University College Cork has appointed Dr Gabriel Crean the new director of the National Microelectronics Research Centre (NMRC) at UCC. He will succeed Dr Gerard Wrixon, who has been appointed university president.

The NMRC is recognised internationally as a world class centre of excellence in information and communications technology. Dr Crean joined the NMRC in 1988, and most recently held a joint position as assistant director of the centre, and director of the Optronics centre at the NMRC.
