Byrne to present final ‘Time Warp’ of season on Sunday

Veteran broadcaster has failed to comment on whether show will return

Veteran broadcaster Gay Byrne will present the last of his Sunday afternoon jazz music shows this week.

"Welcome to the second last, otherwise known as the penultimate Time Warp , in the present series," Mr Byrne told audiences at the weekend.

The radio broadcaster reportedly said late last year he was considering leaving radio once he turned 80. The Road Safety Authority chairman will celebrate his 80th birthday in August.

The Sunday mix of jazz, big band and swing music, coupled with Byrne’s personal presentation of news and current affairs, brings in about 45,000 listeners.

On a recent show Mr Byrne called on Minister for Justice Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan to apologise to Gda John Wilson and Sgt Maurice McCabe. "They have been grossly wronged, they have been ballyragged and contradicted and made to feel badly and the right thing to do now would be to come out in the open and say: 'We're sorry these guys have been wronged and we want to put it right'," he said.
