Are you a saver or a spender?
I’m definitely a spender – you only live once.
Do you shop around for better value?
I tend to shop for quality over value but if both come hand-in-hand it’s even better.
What has been your most extravagant purchase ever and how much did it cost?
A Gucci bag, it set me back €2,000. I wear it everyday to give reason for the purchase.
What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money?
This may sound strange but a trip to Asia. You can’t beat travelling – it’s memories, experiences and encounters, way better than something materialistic.
Have you ever crossed the Border to shop?
I have never purposely crossed the Border to shop but if I’m up North to work I usually take it as an excuse to shop. But I think the bargains you can find down here are just a good.
Do you haggle over prices?
It depends where I am shopping but I have lived in South America and Africa and haggling comes hand-in-hand with the way of life there so I have developed an excellent talent for it.
Has the recession changed your spending habits?
No, it hasn’t changed my spending habit with how much I spend but definitely where I spend it. I try to support Irish brands more now.
Do you invest in shares?
Not yet, I just turned 21 but it is something I will do.
Cash or card?
Always card.
What was the last thing you bought and was it good value for money?
Insoles from Elverys after I had my foot analysed. Definitely great value. I’m wearing them everyday with runners or heels and I love them.
Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?
Yes. My parents brought me up with the motto that if I wanted anything I had to earn it myself so saving up for purchases was always a huge part of my teenage years, and it has stood to me greatly. From iPods to holidays, I still have an old school piggy bank.
Have you ever lost money?
Yes and that is why I always use a card now.
Are you a gambler and if so have you ever had a big win?
No, I’m not. But if I’m at the races I will throw a few bets on my lucky numbers. Once I gambled while on holiday in the Seychelles and I made $800 – pretty good considering I had no clue how to play the game.
Is money important to you?
It’s important in the respect that it allows me to do what I love – travel, enjoy nice things and treat the people close to me but it only contributes for a small fraction of my happiness.
Best money saving tip you’ve ever heard?
No one has ever really given me that much money-saving advice but from personal experience I would say look back on your receipts weekly – it might shock. The things we don’t even notice we spend money on.
How much money do you have on you now?
None, but I have my trusty card.
