US consumer goods group, Procter and Gamble, reported quarterly profits up 11 per cent from the same period a year earlier, to $836 million (£531.8 million).

The food and household products conglomerate, which employs around 250 people in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, said the earnings in its second fiscal quarter, to December 31st, came in revenues of $9.09 billion, up 7 per cent from the same period in 1994.

Six-month fiscal year profits were up 12 per cent to $1.73 billion dollars on revenues of $18.1 billion, the company said.

"Our results for the quarter continue to reflect solid growth," said P&G chairman Mr John Pepper.
