BORD na Mona is one of the largest, four contributors to the Institute of European Affairs, the policy research organisation set up by the company's former chairman, Mr Brendan Halligan. Bord na Mona has contributed over £40,000 to the organisation since it was set up in 1989, according to Mr Terry Stewart, the institute's director general. It is expected to contribute a further £10,000 this year.

Mr Halligan, who retired as Bord na Mona chairman last September was not directly involved in the solicitation of funds from the state company, according to Mr Stewart, the approaches were made by another member of the organisation directly to the chief executive, Dr Eddie O'Connor, he explained.

Three other organisations have contributed the same amount as Bord na Mona - the ESB, Aer Rianta and the Irish Permanent, of which Mr Halligan is also a director.

The institute, which rents a house on North Great George's Street that is part owned by Mr Halligan, was set up in 1989 to foster debate on European integration, according to Mr Stewart.
