On Wednesday, April 29th, businesses across Ireland will mark a significant milestone: Ibec’s 12th National Workplace Wellbeing Day. Over the past dozen years, this initiative has grown from a novel concept – as Europe’s only day dedicated to workplace wellbeing – into a cornerstone of the Irish corporate calendar.
National Workplace Wellbeing Day provides the perfect platform for organisations to celebrate their people and bring their company culture to life through shared experiences. Ultimately, it is an opportunity for employers to spotlight the year-round strategies that support their employees every day.
As the modern workplace continues to evolve this year’s focus, belonging, feels more relevant than ever. In an increasingly diverse and intergenerational world of work, true wellbeing happens when every employee feels genuinely connected to their colleagues and their organisation.
As Kara McGann, Ibec head of skills and social policy, says: “Belonging is more than a cultural metric; it is the heartbeat of a thriving workplace and the foundation of true wellbeing. As we champion an Ireland that is open for business, we recognise that our competitive edge lies in a society and workplaces where every individual feels deeply seen, heard and valued. This internal social cohesion is the true architect of brand Ireland, signalling to the world that our economic strength is built on the resilience, unity and shared purpose of our people.”

For HR professionals and business leaders, the challenge is often finding the time and resources to translate this high-level vision into a practical reality. However, creating a meaningful impact does not require a large budget or months of planning.
When busy workloads and hybrid schedules blur the lines of connection, creating environments where employees feel fully embraced and supported makes all the difference. Whether your team is fully remote, in-office or hybrid, here is a blueprint to help your organisation celebrate belonging and spotlight your year-round supports this April.
Celebrate belonging (on any budget)
Fostering community doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are simple, highly effective ways to bring your teams together:
- Organise a 5k walk and talk: Encourage staff to participate in a walk to promote physical activity and build connection with colleagues. It costs nothing and gets people away from their screens for a much-needed mental break.
- Launch a weekly team coffee break: This is an easy and effective way to boost morale, improve communication, spark creativity and strengthen relationships. Use National Workplace Wellbeing Day to officially kick off this new weekly routine.
- Leverage the team’s skill set: We all have unique skills and passion points outside of the workplace that could be shared. If a colleague plays guitar or is practises yoga in their spare time, empowering them to lead a 15-minute session is a free, authentic way to celebrate the whole person.
- Create a gratitude wall: Establish a space – either virtual or physical – where employees can share messages of appreciation for their colleagues. This simple act fosters a deeply positive and supportive work environment; all you need are sticky notes or a dedicated digital channel.
Tap into ready-made partner offers
To help businesses activate the day, a wide range of partners are running ready-made activations; lunch and learns; and special offers. You can browse, share and book all of these directly through the National Workplace Wellbeing Day Partner Hub, which is updated regularly in the run-up to the big day.

Spotlight your year-round supports
While the energy of the day comes from celebrating your people, it should ultimately serve as a launch pad to highlight the critical resources that support your team every single day.
- Organise a wellbeing showcase: Hold an in-person, online or hybrid event to remind your teams of the resources and supports available to them.
- Demystify the EAP: The Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is one of your most valuable tools, but it is often underutilised. Send a dedicated communication explaining exactly what the EAP covers, how to access it confidentially, and who it is designed for.
- Highlight core HR policies: Remind employees of the structural supports you have in place to foster work-life balance, whether that includes flexible working arrangements, parental leave, or mental health days.
- Launch a wellbeing calendar: Show that belonging is a year-round commitment. Tap into upcoming cultural and wellbeing milestones your organisation will celebrate and support, such as Pride, Mental Health Awareness Week and International Women’s Day.
