GOLF/Digest: Wales' former Masters champion Ian Woosnam hopes victorious skipper Bernhard Langer will step aside to allow him to move up from vice-captain to Sam Torrance in 2002.
Woosnam said yesterday that the Ryder Cup committee should resist the temptation to offer Langer a second crack at the job when they meet in December.
"There's no one cooler than Bernhard," said Woosnam, "but times have changed since the days of Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher. So many players have put so much into the Ryder Cup - myself, Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle, Olazabal and Monty - that the times of doing it twice are gone. It's only fair that one of us gets a go."
PGA TOUR: Vijay Singh won his eighth tournament of the season at the 84 Lumber Classic in Pennsylvania when a final round of 69 for a 273 total gave him a one-shot winning margin over Stewart Cink.
SENIORS TOUR: Eamonn Darcy finished fourth as Carl Mason won his fifth European Seniors Tour title of the season when he closed with a three over par 75 in blustery conditions to claim the ADT English Seniors Open at Formby Hall, Liverpool.
The 51-year-old Englishman finished on a three under par aggregate of 216. Scotland's John Chillas closed with a fine one under par 71 to share second place with England's Bob Cameron on level par 216.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Craig Stadler fired a final round of six-under-par 66 yesterday to win the SAS Championship and claim his fifth title of the season.
Stadler finished on 17 under par 199, six shots clear of Tom Jenkins. Des Smith shot a final round of 71 for 212.
CHALLENGE TOUR: Zimbabwe's Marc Cayeux became only the second double winner of the season at the Open de Toulouse with a tense, sudden-death play-off victory over Scotland's David Drysdale that will secure him a European Tour Card for 2005.
