Camogie Ashbourne Cup final: The prestigious Ashbourne Cup will reside in UCD for the first time since 1988 after the Dublin college defeated UCC, 2-10 to 1-4, in Ballinderreen yesterday.

A goal after 15 minutes from Lorraine Davis paved the way for UCD to go in smiling at the break, 1-5 to 0-3 ahead.

The final saw Cork players competing against each other and, interestingly, it was a Cork player on each side that did most of the damage - Rene Buckley inflicting the harm on UCC and Emer Dillon always a thorn in the UCD side.

Whatever manager Dave Kennedy said to UCD at half-time, it must have been strong stuff, as the Dublin college immediately went a further three points up thanks to Rena Buckley, Susie O'Carroll and Una Leacy.

It was the perfect start to the second half for UCD and it took Cork 18 minutes to record their first score of the half - a point from Dillon.

Nine minutes from time, Kilkenny's Julianne Woodcock gave a perfect pass to another Kilkenny player, Emilie Darmody, who smashed the ball to the UCC net.

A late goal from Cork's Sarah O'Donovan with one minute of normal time remaining was some consolation for UCC.

Further history was created in Ballinderreen yesterday when Garda won their first Ashbourne Shield final, defeating UUJ by 3-9 to 0-6.
