World No1 Jason Day survived a few anxious moments last night to claim a seventh victory in his last 17 events with the Players Championship at Sawgrass.

Day carded a closing 71 to finish 15 under par and four shots ahead of American Kevin Chappell, with Rory McIlroy again failing to pick up that elusive first win of the season.

McIlroy carded a 70 to finish in 12th, a shot behind fellow Irishman Graeme McDowell who finished in a tie for ninth after a second consecutive 69. Shane Lowry’s final round of 71 left him six under overall and in a tie for 16th place.
