SOCCER SHORTS:CHELSEA captain John Terry was named yesterday as the sportsman behind a gagging injunction involving his private life.
His identity was revealed after Mr Justice Tugendhat gave his reasons at London’s High Court for lifting the order which he originally granted at a private hearing last Friday. It covered the alleged relationship between LNS – as married Terry was referred to in court – and another woman.
The judge, who heard that News Group Newspapers wanted to publish a story about the footballer last Sunday, said: “I accept that the information sought to be protected is not in the public domain in the sense that there is nothing left to be protected. But the evidence is that there has been wide circulation amongst those involved in the sport in question, including agents and others, and not just amongst those directly engaged in the sport.”
Madrid fail to have Ronaldo ban lifted
CRISTIANO RONALDO has been ruled out of tonight’s trip to Deportivo La Coruna after Real Madrid failed in their final bid to have the Portugal international available for the match.
Having seen their initial appeal against Ronaldo’s two-match suspension rejected by the Spanish football federation’s appeals committee yesterday, Madrid took their case to Spain’s sporting disciplinary committee (CEDD).
Madrid had been hoping Ronaldo would be allowed to play prior to the CEDD making their final ruling in the coming days, but that bid was turned down.
Ronaldo was handed the two-game suspension earlier this week following his sending-off against Malaga last Sunday.
Wilshere moves on loan to Bolton
ARSENAL midfielder Jack Wilshere has joined Bolton on a loan deal until the end of the season.
The 18-year-old has made seven Arsenal first-team appearances this season.
However, manager Arsène Wenger has given the green light to the move in order for the player to gain further experience in the Premier League.
Heartsyesterday announced the departure of manager Csaba Laszlo with immediate effect. Jim Jefferies has been appointed as the new manager.
Elsewhere, Sunderland are hoping to sign Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari as cover from leading scorer Darren Bent.
Mowbray unwilling to offer McDonald any guarantees
SCOTT McDonald’s future at Celtic remains in doubt after Tony Mowbray revealed he would not assure the striker of a regular first-team place.
Reports yesterday claimed the club have rejected a €4 million bid from Middlesbrough for McDonald, who is also said to be interesting West Ham.
The Australia international is back in training after a hernia operation but the Celtic boss hinted that talks about the striker’s future had reached an impasse.
Mowbray said: “I can’t assure him he will be on the field for 90 minutes of every game, because I’ve got respect for the other players and that’s why you have a squad.
“He is obviously a talented boy who has scored goals for the club over the piece but no player gets guarantees that he will play 90 minutes of every game.
“Would I like to keep Scott McDonald? Yes. I want as many good players as possible for me.”
The turnaround at Celtic continued yesterday as Stephen McManus completed his loan move to Middlesbrough while left-back Danny Fox signed for Burnley. Mowbray rejected speculation that he is interested in Hearts left-back Lee Wallace but was less strident about claims Celtic were in for Real Mallorca defender, Ivan Ramis.
