Spurs pair handed contract extensions

Tottenham pair Jermaine Jenas and Michael Dawson have been handed one-year contract extensions to keep them at White Hart Lane until 2013.

Centre-back Dawson, 24, had been linked with a move to Newcastle towards the end of last season but his new deal has signalled he is part of Juande Ramos' plans.

Since arriving from Nottingham Forest in 2005, Dawson has enjoyed regular football at Spurs and is expected to feature next season if Jonathan Woodgate or Ledley King are rested.

Jenas, 25, was also brought through the ranks at Forest but arrived via Newcastle and last season earned a recall to the England team, scoring the first goal in Fabio Capello's reign as manager.

Dawson and Jenas are part of the group of young English players at Spurs, with Tom Huddlestone extending his contract earlier in the summer. England winger David Bentley is also expected to arrive from Blackburn.

Jenas said: "We got a taste of success by winning the Carling Cup last season and I believe there is more to come. I definitely want to be part of a bright future for Tottenham."

Dawson added on the club's official website: "Spurs is a great place to be. When I was offered a new deal I didn't think twice about signing.

"The club has progressed since I've been here. We won our first trophy in nine years and, hopefully, we'll add some more silverware and finish a lot higher in the league next season."
