Drogheda prove too strong for Limerick

Brennan brothers on target for Drogheda

Drogheda 3 Limerick 0

Drogheda rounded off a fantastic week with this important league win over a Limerick side that played second fiddle to their opponents from pillar to post.

Early on Barry Ryan’s fingertips prevented Drogheda taking the lead when Declan O’Brien played a one-two with Gavin Brennan only to see his shot turned around the post by the goalkeeper.

The same pair combined once more again minutes later but O’Brien on this occasion stabbed his effort wide.

Though Drogheda failed to turn their dominance into something more positive they deservedly opening their account on 39 minutes. A long clearance from Michael Schlingermann was flicked on by Mick Daly and helped towards his own goal by Stephen Folan into the path of Declan O’Brien who on this occasion made no mistake with the finish. Indeed the visitors were fortunate not to concede again before the break after Gavin Brennan followed up O’Brien’s goal bound effort only to have his attempt to turn it into the net blocked by Shane Costelloe.

The home side’s dominance was at last reflected in the score line when they went two up on the hour courtesy of a wonderful Gavin Brennan goal. Mick Daly picked up possession out on the right and sent a defence splitting pass through the heart of the Limerick defence which Brennan raced onto and cracked his shot home without breaking his stride.

Not to be outdone the other Brennan brother Ryan made the points safe from the penalty spot in the 76th minute after Joe Gamble handled his initial effort inside the box.
