Wenger's job for life
Arsene Wenger has been promised a job for life at Arsenal as he celebrates 10 years at the club. Vice-chairman David Dein said yesterday that when Wenger eventually retires from management, he should be offered a seat on the board as a club director.
Wenger arrived at Highbury on September 28th, 1996 and, in his first full season in charge, Arsenal won the first of two doubles.
In his decade at the helm, the club has won the Premiership title three times, the FA Cup four times and also reached the finals of both the Uefa Cup and Champions League.
Dein said: "He was responsible for the new training ground and without the success we have had, we couldn't have built the new stadium that now allows us to compete with anybody in the world.
"We have said that if the day comes when he wants to retire, then there must be a seat on the board for him, as we don't want to lose his talent, his expertise, his knowledge and his judgment."
Eto'o out until 2007
Samuel Eto'o will miss Barcelona's Champions League fixtures against Chelsea and may not play again this year after rupturing the meniscus in his right knee.
The Cameroon international sustained the injury while attempting a pass during Wednesday's Group A match with Werder Bremen. Eto'o, 25, was carried off on a stretcher in the 65th minute of the match in Germany and the initial diagnosis of the injury by Barcelona doctor Ricard Pruna has now been confirmed by an MRI scan.
Pruna, who said the injury occurs when there is a sudden change of direction of the knee, commented at the time that "if this diagnosis is confirmed, he could be out for between two and three months".Eto'o, who suffered a similar injury in 2005, will now undergo arthroscopic treatment at the Clinica del Pilar in Barcelona.
Gordon asked for proof
Pressure is building on Steve McClaren's agent Colin Gordon to produce evidence of corruption in football after his claims that the English game was viewed as "the dirty man of Europe".
Gordon, who is also Theo Walcott's agent, claimed the practice of "bung-taking" was rife in the game and is a "very sophisticated business".
The Association of Football Agents has reacted angrily, while the FA will be writing to Gordon to ask him to back up his remarks.
Drumaville in charge
Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has vowed to bring new investment into the club after his consortium assumed full control.
The Drumaville group reached the 90 per cent threshold to trigger a compulsory buy-out of the remaining shares some time ago, and are in the process of doing just that.
"By taking full control of the club, Drumaville is in a position to bring in further investment more easily and to control the operation of the business more closely, driving it forward in areas both on and off the field," said Quinn.
Makelele in squad
France coach Raymond Domenech has included Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele in his squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Scotland and the Faroe Islands next month.Arsenal defender William Gallas has also been called up despite sustaining a hamstring injury against FC Porto on Tuesday.
Wembley doubt
Wembley's hopes of staging this season's English FA Cup final receded last night as it emerged that the legal dispute between the stadium operator and the builder Multiplex has become more complicated.
