The future of Mickey Moran and his Mayo management team is in doubt after strong criticisms were expressed at a meeting of the county board last night.

Board chairman James Waldron told the meeting that he spoke with Moran on Sunday but he did not get a definite expression of interest from Moran to continue along with his backroom team of John Morrison and Kieran Gallagher.

Moran's reappointment is far from a certainty as delegates told of how they felt Mayo were poorly prepared for the All-Ireland final, in which they were hammered by Kerry.

Claremorris delegate Willie Feeley, a former intercounty referee, said the Mayo team "looked like ladeens" alongside the Kerry players.

Another delegate, Sean Hallinan (Ballintubber), said there should be an explanation for why the management team had no plans for the Kerry full-forward line, which destroyed Mayo.

Waldron said Moran is due to meet Morrison today, and board officials would talk with them later in the week.

A number of delegates said they felt Mayo should not go outside the county to find a manager.

Meanwhile, Seán Boylan will announce a 40-man Ireland squad today ahead of this weekend's International Rules training camp in Toulouse, where the players will use the state-of-the-art training facilities of the three-time rugby European Cup champions.

Boylan will reduce the panel to 27 and announce a captain on October 18th.

The delay in announcing a panel is due to the overburdened club fixture schedule. Players certain of selection on the final 27 who have club commitments will be exempt from travelling to France.

Several Leinster and Connacht players must also decide between the Interprovincial Championship final in Boston on October 22nd and Ireland duty.

The International Rules first Test against Australia takes place on October 28th at Pearse Stadium with the second in Croke Park on November 5th.

Armagh manager Joe Kernan has ruled out any possibility of Diarmuid Marsden returning to the Armagh football panel. "Not a chance he'll be returning," said Kernan.

With Kernan's former right-hand man Paul Grimley having taken up a similar position alongside new Cavan manager Donal Keogan, John Rafferty has been added to Kernan's backroom team along with under-21 manager Peter McDonald.

The women's Gaelic football association have announced that Vhi Healthcare will sponsor the All-Ireland club championships for the next two years.

This year is the 30th anniversary of the competition with the club finals taking place in late November. It was also announced yesterday the Vhi and the association will be co-hosting a series of seminars offering lifestyle and health advice in clubs throughout Ireland next year

Galway County Board chairman Frank Burke last night described the death of 72-year-old football board treasurer Miko Kelly as a "huge loss". Kelly was a selector with the Galway senior footballers during the glory years of the 1960s.

"Miko was the football board treasurer for the past 25 years and also served in that position for three years for the Connacht Council. He was a meticulous man, had a great manner and his passing represents a huge loss for the GAA in Galway," he said.
