Graeme McDowell's approach to the third play-off hole at the Ballantine's Championship has been deemed good enough to win the European Tour's shot of the month.

An exquisite seven iron from 180-yards set up the all-important birdie to see off Jeev Milkha Singh and give McDowell his first title since 2004.

McDowell clinched victory after tapping in from no more than 12 inches, Singh having missed his five-foot birdie putt.

"There's no doubt it's in my top five best shots I've ever hit under the gun," the 28-year-old said of the shot.

"In the play-off, Jeev looked like he had hit it pretty close and I had a similar yardage to what I had the second time around and I knew a seven iron was obviously perfect. This time I just had to make sure I aimed right at the flag, and it came off perfectly."

Meanwhile, a hole-in-one helped Belfast's Michael Hoey take a share of the early lead at the Challenge Tour's AGF-Allianz Open today. Hoey, a two-time winner of the tour, shares the clubhouse lead on four-under with playing partner Joakim Haeggman.
