Former Armagh manager Peter McDonnell has revealed that the leaking of his team selection and tactics in the build-up to the county’s defeat to Monaghan led to his resignation. McDonnell outlined his reasons for leaving the Orchard County post in a statement released last night.
He explained that with fabricated stories appearing in the press and breaches of confidentiality had undermined his position.
“Throughout the year a number of fabricated stories have appeared in the press and have been alluded to by pundits on national TV,” he said
“This was a constant source of annoyance to players and management and we now know that this was part of a concerted campaign to undermine the group.
“We are disappointed in a time of accountability that articles could be sanctioned for publication by unnamed scribes and prompts from the same used as the basis for informed opinion by columnists.”
Mark O’Riordan, meanwhile, is back in the Limerick team for Sunday’s All-Ireland hurling quarter-final against Dublin.
David Breen has been named at centre forward with Donnacha Sheehan losing out in a much altered forward unit which also sees the recall of Wayne McNamara at left half forward this time to the exclusion of Mike O’Brien.
