Italian Serie AJuventus moved six points clear at the top of Serie A last night after beating Fiorentina 1-0 while champions AC Milan were held to a goalless draw at Brescia. Uruguayan Ruben Olivera grabbed the 72nd minute winner for Juventus at the Delle Alpi stadium.
Juve lead with 28 points with Milan in second place on 22 points while Udinese move up to third place after Vincenzo Iaquinta scored twice in their impressive 3-0 win at AS Roma.
Inter Milan's remarkable run of drawn games continued as they were held 2-2 at home to Bologna - their ninth draw in 11 games. A Claudio Bellucci header three minutes from the end gave Bologna a point at the San Siro. Cristiano Lucarelli's goal gave Livorno a 1-0 win over Lazio.
Meanwhile, Sicily will be the centre of attention in Serie A tonight for the first time in nearly 40 years when Palermo and Messina, two of the three major cities on the island, meet in a local derby.
Messina and Palermo have never met in the top flight and the last time two Sicilian teams fought for pride in Serie A was back in 1965 when Catania beat Messina 4-2. Tonight's game in Messina will be only the ninth occasion when two Sicily teams have competed against each other in the top flight - a reflection of the failure of the three major clubs to maintain a sustained presence in Serie A.
Palermo, the Sicilian capital, is enjoying top flight football for the first time in 31 years while Messina's last campaign in Serie A was in 1965.
In the decades since, Sicily has continued to produce top class footballers but they made their name far from the island - usually at Juventus.
